PROFILE

The Department of Physical Education was established in 1927 mainly for imparting Physical Training to all the students in AU and affiliated colleges. The Department of Physical Education got teaching status in 2007. The department of physical education began its post graduate program M.P.Ed., in the academic year 2007-08. Later the department introduced M.Phil. and Ph.D programs in year 2009. The M.P.Ed. program is recognized by NCTE. Ever since its inception it has been conducting many Inter - University, Inter - Collegiate and Open Tournaments. The Department plays a crucial role by supporting and coordinating with the Andhra University Sports Board in the organization of several Inter-Collegiate and National Tournaments and participating in the All India Inter University tournaments. The department coordinates the game and sports activities to the affiliated colleges and provides opportunities for the students to demonstrate their competence in inter- collegiate sports meets. The department is also coordinates with the AU Sports Board in the selection of the various Andhra University which teams participate in the South Zone, South West Zone and All India Inter - University tournaments. The department of Physical Education and Sports Sciences offers M.P.Ed., and Ph.D Programs. The department has sports hostel which in houses 100 sports persons for coaching, training and conditioning camps for the preparation of South zone, South West zone and All India Inter-University Tournaments Men & Women teams. The students of department of physical education and sports sciences are exposed to the latest changes, trends and techniques to be in touch with the latest information with regard to rules and interpretations of various games. The department is known for its research contribution across the state as few Universities in the state of Andhra Pradesh offer research programs in Physical Education.

Vision

The vision of the Department is to shape the students into skillful, emotionally adjusted individuals integrated with skills, studies and research activities be at institution or in the community in which he/she lives which would in turn help in the all-round development of a teaching personality.

Mission

To equip students to be suitable for employment for imparting Practical and research based quality education, to inspire the students a desire and confidence to become entrepreneurs in their chosen field of Physical education, sports and exercise science.

History

The Department of Physical Education was established in 1927 by academic senate mainly for imparting Physical Training to all the students in AU and affiliated colleges. From 1933 to 1993 the nomenclature used to be the Department of Physical Education inspite of not offering any academic programs. But for some time from 1993 to 2007 the nomenclature of Physical Education has been changed as Physical Education Unit.During 1994 to 1999 the Department offered M.P.Ed. Course (summer sequential) for the in service Physical Education teachers. Sri P.R.Narayanaswami was the founder Course Coordinator in 1994 later Prof. N.Vijay Mohan became the course coordinator in 1999.

The Department of Physical Education got teaching status in 2007. The first Head of the Department was Prof. M.Syam Babu in 2007 later in 2016 Prof N.Vijay Mohan became the Head of the Department and since 2019 Dr. A.Pallavi has been heading the Department.
